Tinned Shield Edge
#1
Hi,
Is any evidence of tinned brass scutum rims?
I have been working on my curve-sided Augustan shield, and so far have tinned the boss and a pair of metal arrows on the shield itself. Is tinning the rim something Romans just wouldn't do?
thanks,
Peter

I've seen lots of bits of edge binding, but not one that had any tinning/silvering on it.

I'm with Matt. I've seen many Brass and Steel edging scraps but never any Tinned, but who knows, might turn up some day. Check here:

I know theres a lot of images but you'll find edging in there as well.

Hmmm, you'll have to cut and pase the above links into your browser...sorry

One of my comillitones in Legio XI has a shield with tinned umbo and tinned edging made by Antoni Feldon. It looks fantastic, but I don't know of any originals that were done like this.

Vale,

No, on that link it was the umbo which was silvered.
