Where do the majority of you get your 1/8 door skins or luan for scutums? I have found 1 place within 10 miles that has it, $10.40 a sheet.

I forgot to add, they have regular base grade, then Oak and Birch, didnt get the prices for them though. Thoughts??

Thanks!

Luan is a common flooring material and it is usually available at most Home stores, Lowes, Home Depot, etc in oak veneers in 4x8 foot sheets.

There's a store in Maryland Heights that stocks 1/8" Luan

I get mine from either Home Depot or lumber mills. I'd go with the 1/8" birch luan if you can.

I'm not a tree-ologist, but I thought "luan" was a kind of lightweight mahogany.

We get the 1/8" bendable birch stuff from a Northern Va Supplier, Colonial Hardwoods. Rather more expensive a sheet but so easy to work with. Can be bought to bend on either axis.
Some of my pieces roll into as small as a 8" circle, but that may depend on the type of birch (there are several types): you'll have to ask.

I had to look through about 5 different Home Depot's before I found one that keeps it in stock. A clerk at one of the first 4 told me that luan was a "seasonal" item. Confusedhock:

He couldn't tell me when luan season would start again. :?

and it's sold in 3' x 6'-8" sheets. Runs about $6 a sheet.

We've got the process down to about $25.00 per blank:

Three sheets of luan generate 2 blanks if you use 3-plys. $18.00
2 pieces of red oak 1x4x2' for handle - $10.00
20' of screen moulding for bracing strips- $7.50
bottle of wood glue - $5.00
bottle of Gorilla Glue - $8.00

total of a little less than 50 bucks for 2 blanks, split 2-ways = $25

Good math, and good figgering.
1. what kind of screen molding--stock number?
2. what's the stock number of the door skins? Nobody down here so far seems to know what that is. Sigh.

Hey David,

I believe Home Depot's SKU for the luan is 166-06.

and I lost the SKU for the moulding, but it's the 3/4"x1/8" 'D' shaped moulding, runs about 39 cents a foot. Don't cut it there in the store if you can help it. The stuff bends better if it's left in it's full length, which I believe is 20'.

My neighbor told me Home Depot carries it in the 1/8 inch size. Its in the back by the cabinets and they call it veneer or some such. I am going to be checking it out later today.

Wes is correct..they do sell it in the cabinet section, too. But I think that is smaller sheets. Maybe too narrow for a scutum. Worth checking it out, though.

The one's I'm getting are in the plywood section, and are called "door skins".

Two 1/8" sheets is really more appropriate than three however- the scuta from Dura Europos and the majority of sections of copper alloy edge binding I've ever measured show that semicylindrical plywood scuta were really generally only about 6-7mm in thickness. Three sheets of 1/8" plywood is over 9.5mm thick...
