Roman Events in Yorkshire
#1
This weekend and next seems to be a veritable Roman Festival in Yorkshire.

This weekend the RMRS, VIII Augusta and colleagues from Ireland are at Scarborough Castle. I had the privilege of watching them today, with Mat from RAT and Comitatus. Together they fielded around 10 tents, artillery and 20 soldiers, in a chill wind and occasional rain. Good weather for Yorkshire. They were assisted by the standard English Heritage displays by Raphael Falconry (excellent as ever) and kiddies entertainers.

There were also 2 English Heritage riders, using English Heritage four-horned saddles, Ermine Street Guard tack, plus ESG equipment supplemented by stuff let by the groups in attendance. They did a standard ESG cavalry style display.

Tomorrow I'm taking part in a 1st century Roman cavalry display with 4 riders at Mirfield in West Yorkshire.

Next weekend the emphasis shifts to the 4th century as Comitatus take over Sewerby Hall near Bridlington on the August BH. Hopefully there will be around 25 soldiers, 28 tents and 4 cavalry plus artillery. I'm praying for some sunshine. Details and video from last year are on the web-site.

Yorkshire, the place to be!

Is that MattL from the RAT?

I always miss the fun!

I suppose as Corbridge is end of season, hardly anyone will be there?

I don't think it's MattL (but I could be completely wrong) I think it's another Mat whose a member here, but I haven't seen him post loads, so you might not recall him, but he's a member of Comitatus.

Two cork lads are coming Ha,ha
"The Kaiser knows the Munsters,
by the Shamrock on their caps,
And the famous Bengal Tiger, ever ready for a scrap,
And all his big battalions, Prussian Guards and grenadiers,
Fear to face the flashing bayonets of the Munster Fusiliers."

Sadly the sun didn't shine at Mirfield, but it did rain. My horse slipped a few times and it all made for an interesting show.

Role on Sewerby!

PS Cork sounds interesting.

The weather forecast for this weekend is excellent. A long weekend on cliff top gardens of a country house overlooking Bridlington Bay. What a fantastic way to bring the late Roman army to life. I think there will be over 30 authentic tents as the Praesidiensis come back to Praesidium.

Good luck this weekend where ever you are.
