City management in Eastern Rome
#1
Ave Civitas,

I have a pretty good idea of how cities were managed in the Western half of the Empire, but I think that city management in the east was different and the Romans just absorbed the city councils and management already in place.

What I don't know and want to find out is, what were those positions called. For instance, what was the forum in the west was an agora in the east. But what was a mayor? Did they have an equivalent to the Duoviri in cities east of the Adriatic Sea?

Is there somewhere where I can find a listing of these titles and names? It would be a blessing if there was a parallel list somewhere that someone could point me toward.

Thanks for all your help.

Have you tried Sviatoslav Dmitriev, City Government in Hellenistic and Roman Asia Minor? There's a review here.

Thank you Jona,

I have ordered that book. Unfortunately for me, at the website where I found the book I also found three others that I could not live without.

All donations are welcome.
