Traveling to Greece
#76
Quote:There's a chap from England running "Sparta Fitness Holidays" on the Island of Euboea. If you're going to Greece and a fitness freak, you might like to check it out. I had a meeting with the man, Mark Osborne. Apparently there's nothing military about the programme, and no Pankration, but there is some serious fitness training. Anyone who can make the next week, starting at the end of September, can get a 33% discount, from £1500 down to £1000 (exclusive of travel). Yes, I know it's a long shot, but just thought I'd mention it. www.sparta-fitness-holidays.co.uk . If you want to go in the longer term, I may be able to negotiate (smaller!) discounts for RAT members.

Bonnie, if you're going to Greece, make it next year, when several of us plan to meet in Thermopylae for the 4th of August. I'll even wear my bronze thorax, in your honour!
the rooms look a bit to luxurios to be spartan .lol

Yes, looks nice eh? Good base camp for a little 'hunting ' expedition... Tongue roll:

Well, Mark has offered to let people sleep outside in thin red cloaks if they want to, but you won't get a bigger discount!

Quote:Was Zaharo untouched by the fires? My cousins have moved to there I think.

Zaharo forest is burnt to the ground. Plus the surrounding villages. The fire burn a part of my grandpa's village and surrounding forests. Fortunately flames stopped 50cm from the house and burnt just the garden and about 80 olive trees. All the rest fields around the vilage were burnt except ours :!: Also the best news are that a huge platan tree living in our fields for the past 600 years is safe. My grandpa would be devastated if it was burnt.

What village was your grandfather from? Mine was from kalydona! As far as I know the farm went in the fire, and can only assume the village went too! Sad
I actually met a guy called yiannis there when I was trying to find the farm a few years ago! I think his georgeous g/f was called Marianna!
Really great people, and very helpfull to a total stranger!

He is from Frixa. They evacuated with SUPER PUMA chopter cause the forest was from hundred years old pine trees and burnt like crazy. Nothing else could aproach. The flames were tall as a 10 floor building.

I hate to imagine how they got the grandmother out, but at least i know they are safe. It must have been Blo.dy terrifying to say the least...

I have heard the yare starting a re-planting project already, and that Israel has donated trees for the project.

Wish I could get over to help out...not sure where you would start...

Does anyone know of a greek news website in greek? (the greek equivalent of cnn or something?) It could be a good place for me to practice while I'm learning greek. BTW I just bought an Oxford greek english dictionary, and I love it!

www.in.gr should be a good starting point.

I just finished the eurotalk course on greek, now I'll need to get rosetta stone back from my library (I couldn't renew it, it was on hold.) I put it on hold as soon as it gets checked in.

I'm well on my way to learning greek, now. After I learn, I could make the money for the trip by teaching greek.

I bet I could make money for this trip from paid surveys. Maybe once I learn greek I could teach basic greek to travellers to make money.
