But where was it worn? What was its function?

I'm reminded of a chatelaine from a later period, but this appears to be decorative, not for hanging sewing tools, etc., from. Looking forward to your report, Mr. Bell.

Don't know if book has arrived yet Caballo, I'm still approximately 100miles east of Aberdeen, so won't know until the 24th, weather permitting! Big Grin wink:

Thanks for theinfo too, will peruse it this evening when offshift!

Enjoy Vindolanda Dave! I take it your back from Caledonia?

Darned just read the link, so making a copy wouldn't be much use I guess, but it might be a better use for the gold I was going to use for my ring! :?

Just got back from Vindolanda a few mins ago, it was excellent. I saw the brooch up close, and the photo hardly does it justice! It's a great piece, and I had a great day, there are some wonderful things in Vindolanda, I saw a horsehair crest that was perfectly preserved, it's believed to be the only one of it's kind in the world Confusedhock:

We were also lucky enough to arrive at the Roman Army Museum just as there was being a talk by some re-enacters, which was very good, and we had a great walk along walltown crags Big Grin

PS. We got back from the misty highlands last week Byron, I had a great time Big Grin

I think the crest is made of some kind of marsh grass, dave! but is only one, true! Smile

Intresting, I was just presuming that it was horsehair, as it didn't specify on the info boards, (unless I just wasn't being attentive  ) incredible nontheless! I wonder why marsh grass though, horsehair would be much easier to get hold of, anyway, sorry for hijacking your thread Byron!

  Well, if this was a face to face conversation, I wouldn't see it as hijacking a conversation, so, to me this is another form of conversing on a subject.....sometimes things wander! (or haven't you paid any attention to any of my posts.......)

I was ondering the same thing to Dave, but it mentions it in the museum somewhere, I believe, and I was lucky to have Brian Stobbs as my tour guide when Iwas there, so he probably mentioned it as well!

Kind of weedy looking tho' isn't it? Still, possibly there were more strands like that to make up a full crest!

 Fair enough, it isn't hijacking Big Grin D

Another thing I found particuly intresting was the arrowheads, some of them were remarkably similar to some medieval bodkins that I own, others were completely differant, but alot had quite a likeness to those used in the middle ages (you can tell i've been making arrows lately can't you  )

Dave and Byron: here you can read more about the hair moss crest: http://www.romanarmy.com/rat/viewtopic. ... =hair+moss

It has been discussed on several occasions in the past in other threads too.

The broach is interesting, in that it shows that there were a variety of decorations given out, aside from torques and phalerae, a fact I was unaware of utill i saw the one in the link from the post on the new statue of hadrian......

I had read medals mentioned, but only thoughti t was refering to the above mentioned types. Its nice to learn something now and then, which is nice instead of hard to take!

Ave Byron,

That is an awesome looking brooch! Thanks for posting.

Concerning the shape of the two shields, I’ve seen that style described as the “Praetorian shieldâ€
