Anyone catch this on BBC's web site?
Seems they have found a huge statue of Hadrian in a town in Turkey.

Wow !

I wonder how its size compares with the colossus of Constantine the Great in Rome and what position he's in (e.g. : sitting, standing, etc.)

I'll try and find out a bit more about this staue. Marc Waelkens, the leader of this dig was one of my professors at university for the last 4 years Smile

This isn't the first colossal statue that was found in Sagalassos either. I remember an Artemis was found some years ago.

Quite a few of my friends dig at Sagalassos so I should be able to get some pictures and info...

WOW! Check out those Hellenstic boots!

Hadrian was strutting his stuff in those!!!

I actually started on copying the boots Caesar is wearing in one of his statues... not quite as elaborate but, Hellenstic the same.

A friend of mine who is a PHD (under Marc Waelkens) working on Sagalassos uploaded these high detail photo's. I'll try to find more pictures.

The high detail picture of the leg gives a good view of the band going round the boot at the ankle.

Looks like a 'modern' double knot too.

Maybe the other one wasn't double knotted and came undone- that's why the statue tripped over and broke :wink: Big Grin

Seriously, those are interesting looking boots. How would they have been fastened above that bow ? Would they have had straps or more lacing ?

Great pics Jef, I got side tracked by the broache and forgot to look back here! That is in amazing condition, despite the disjointed result of the earthquake.

Marcus, please thank your friend for uploading such excellent photos.

This find is getting me excited in architecture again, something which hasn't happened for quite a while. I have to agree with Theodosius, I want to know how this statue is going to compare, and more about its posture.

Thanks for the links and pics. I would be really interested to hear more of whats going on at the site. Any news about Hadrian's statue and other finds would be greatly appreciated.

Would it be possible for you ask your friend to take a photo of the back of the leg and top of the boot?

I'd really like to see how that ring is attached or wrapped around the top of the boot. Is it a metal ring with an opening at the back like a bracelet, or is there a hinge and clasp or is it instead a stiff piece of leather tied at the back, or something else?
