Were the Late roman Auxilia German?
#1
Before I go off on one of my (only very occasional!) rants, I would like to ask everybody the following question:

What is the evidence for the Late Roman Auxilia (say, from the time of Constantine I onwards) being almost entirely German?

I have my own viewpoints and evidence, but would prefer others to have their say first so that I can agree with/disagree with their comments without having to post an entire dissertation to support my views first.

I hope nobody minds, but I have extremely limited time available to go online and can reply to points quicker and - hopefully - in a clearer manner this way!

Yep!

Trouble is, it's been so long since I wrote it, it's probably way out of date now and I didn't want to go off on one without knowing what the latest developments are!

Having said that, it doesn't look like there have been any developments!!

Can't recall when you did your dissertation but did you see this article?

Raising New Units for the Late Roman Army: "Auxilia Palatina"
Michael P. Speidel
Dumbarton Oaks Papers, Vol. 50. (1996), pp. 163-170.

As its a few years sisnce I read your work I can't recall if there is anything in the above which contrdicts or adds to your ideas.

Cheers Nik,

I'll have a look and check to see what it says.
