Mainz and Fulham Hilts
#1
I am close to finishing a Mainz gladius, and before I start the hilt I would like to see some examples.

Can you please post some photos of originals, and reconstructions?

So is this going to be a step by step tutorial?
Visne partem mei capere? Comminus agamus! * Me semper rogo, Quid faceret Iulius Caesar? * Confidence is a good thing! Overconfidence is too much of a good thing.

Salve Pavlvs,

I just got some pictures of gladius hilts from the Nijmegen museum, send me a PM and I will get then to you by regular mail. Sending pics through RAT is a pain Sad They are older finds from a dredge deposit but very servicable. My camera baulked, so the quality leaves wanting, but for an impression should be ok, and i used a ruler in the pics for scale.

Here is a picture of my Fulham hilt. It was created by Matt Lukes, and it is accurate.

There really aren't many hilts for this type of sword known I think- at least I have only ever been able to find a very few- the one from Vindonissa (which is incorrectly displayed with a pompeiensis blade), the Rheingönheim (which I sort of made in wood for Jeff and added a second ribbed band to the guard), are the only two I know of- there are lots of pompeiensis hilts, but precious few mainzensis types. There are many guard plates of the type known, but usually that's all that reains of the handle.

Gaivs,
In response to your query, the grip is very pleasing and comfortable. As you can imagine, the blade is heavier than a Pompeii type, and the grip is narrow, but it fits well and looks good. Thanks again Matt! Hope this answers your question.
