Ave,

Very cool project idea!

Honestly though, some of the helmets appear to have metal "neck protectors" while others appear more flexable.... could just be my eyes though.

Also, did anyone note the smaller, more Greek Style shield at least one of the archer's is holding? Perhaps the Roman archers went with a more Hellenstic kit? They are sporting plumattas.

The grip on the reverse can clearly be seen, the forearm sling and off set handle.
Vale!

I see that the 'Islamic' helmet is in fact the Der el Medineh helmet, well beloved of late Roman enthusiasts. I would have thought Craig Sitch (Manning Imperial) would have known this. His research is normally very good.

What would be the best "off the shelf" 1st century archers helmet, preferably for the Germanic region?
Or would any miles with a prowes for archery wear normal kit and helmet, but no pilum and large shield. There is some discussion on them carrying a parma or other type of round shield. Most interested, please help.

I think most archers would have worn a Roman helmet.

To be honest, I dont like them either... They seem too narrow.

indeed, it is often artistisc liberty and the importance of the face which in my view made the cheeck guards on monuments smaller than we find them.

a more "Roman" style and size cheeck guard would render this helmet much more plausible IMHO..

I would agree that they "look unpleasant" but if you compare tham against the Bryastovets helmet the size of the guard is about right.
That in turn suggests that the reconstruction of the other helmet may not be too far from reality.

With regards to what helmets a 1st C archer would have worn - in Britannia the Hamian Sagittari do not appear to have arrived until the 2nd Century. With no other specific units of archers attested to in known the contempary records then this would suggest that archers when used were part of the "regular" auxiliary units. Therefore it is logical to presume they would have appeared just as their comrades. Having shot my bow whilst wearing a variety of Coolii and my Auxiliary C I have not found it to be a problem with the draw or release.

Hi Guys.
That's me who made those helmets.

The best thing for armourer is when a customer give him a free hand to make reconstruction/replica. But this is not so often. Most often armourer has to listen his customer's will, I think this is normal, as that's customer who orders and pays. This time my customers wanted helmets that looks exactly like those on Trajan Column, including narrow cheek guards, so they won't get in the way when shooting arrows, like they told me. Also, the cheeks in helmets inspired by Bryastovets original, had to be made more narrow than it is in original helmet. I wanted very much to make full replica of Bryastovets helmet, but my customers were limited with money they could spend. But, I think, I can't complain, as previous order was to make two very similar helmets based on Trajan's Column. I suggested to make the second inspired by Bryastovets helmet and to make few changes in order. My customers followed some of my advices and suggestions, so I am quite happy that I was able to make those helmets. I hope some day I will have the opportunity to make close replica of Bryastovets helmet.
Oh, and one more thing : customers wanted me to based on those three helmets from TC - photos in attachment. So, if I see well, there are flexible neck protections attached to those helmets.
