I always read that it took 8 years to conquer Gaul and MA was constantly at war with the Marcomanni for well over a decade ... :? Both of these wars were concluded at lightning speed by the Romans' standards and they had a free hand in which they conducted them (i.e. no "human rights" to worry about, etc).
Dacia took decades to conquer, Spain took over 2 centuries, and the Punic Wars lasted over 100 years. Multigenerational wars seem to be just as common as shorter wars, at least during the Republic and early Empire.
