So, having returned from the Festival, I'm determined to build my own linothorax (and as it is going to by my first step onto the re-enactment arena the end result won't possibly be anything to write home about, really).
I have been able to get presented to me alot of various patterns, methods of building the linothorax, and am resolute to base mine upon the one as shown at my beloved Stamnos E448:
I have read Matthew Amt's guide numerous times, but would like to know if there are any others out there? I need all advice I can come upon!
Thanks!

We can swop notes as we go along...!

Cristina,
am I correct in assuming that you're now officially a member of the Hoplite Association? Darn, no need to say that I'm jealous of you!

Hi Guys
Good to see more people becoming addicted to the Greek culture!
The Linothorax construction is still debated, but if you wish to follow some plans Matthews are a good place to start. There is a school of thought (yes, im one of its main supporters) that the Linothorax was not actually glued and may have been quilted. If you do choose to make a glued linothorax I wouldn't bother making the round structure to glue it together, just glue it flat.
The other thing i would suggest is to only make the outside and inside layers of the Linothorax from Linen, use calico or cotton between these two the difference wont be noticed by anybody but the cost of production will be about one tenth of what it would cost to make one of all Linen.
any question you have just ask.
What ever you do. dont make it out of leather.

I was there at the weekend having just joined the HA as a progression from Roman re-enactment and indeed took part in the displays. I can thoroughly recommend you join! A very very nice warm, friendly bunch of people all of which are willing to help and give assistance and share their knowledge and experience. A welcome departure from some other experiences I have had in the past with Roman re-enactment. If you join there is a section on the members arena part of the website which helps you to reconstruct the Linothorax. Also if you search on RAT there is a large thread on the linothorax which Stephanos (hoplite14) contributed a lot to, who was there at the weekend, as well as many others - very interesting.
Good luck and see you at one of the Greek gigs soon maybe?

Khaire Mark!
I had, in fact, been e-mailing with Andy Jarvis since writing a short essay on Greek Warfare as part of our History class. Actually, I scored an A thanks to his encouragement and knowledgable disposition. I can tell it was a pleasure to talk to him between four eyes and be barked upon during the hoplite drill session (if the kranoi which was knocked on by my heavy spear was yours, my apologies!).
I'd LOVE to enroll myself in the Hoplite Association, being a true hellenophile! The only problem I see in doing so, is that I'm from Sweden... if you happen to found an international branch of the HA do let me know! However, I'm not quite sure I'd be able to make it to alot of events due to the travel costs, which is a huge obstacle to surmount!

I had made some quick visits to the thread before, but have now scoured it thoroughly and found quite some useful information.
My current aim is to create a linothorax consisting of a leather core, with approx. four layers of linen glued and fixed to each side, and the inner layer of pteruges attached to the inside of the linothorax separately.
It may be that my brother, who, at a side note, once was to the UK to re-enact the Battle of Hastings, has some spare leather (he was an avid 'liver' back then, mainly doing fantasy stuff).

Gioi, I must say that I'm sure that you, with your linothorax put on, in all seriousness, would cause the neighbouring women to literally swarm around you!

What is funny with this image is that the armour isn't by far proportional to the shield...

Exactly.
I wonder if there was any obvious reason to depict the items that way.
