Susaanna, on webpage by Danek/Hagel about Homeric singing is stated that because lyra had four strings - performer could play only four notes melody. What do you think of it as perforner? Was the music in Mecaenean and Homeric epochs so primitive - or you could play more developed melodies on this lyre?

Sergey in the image there are 5 strings depicted.
Why Danek/Hagel would claim 4?

Stefan Hagel is a friend of mine and I think he is one of the best resources of ancient music. He is also a very good musician on the greek aulos and the greek kithara. ;-) )
Four strings are claimed to be a "phorminx", one homeric form of a lyra that was used for story telling. Beside that there were also lyrae with five strings, which had a different form.

that article is quite right and good.
It had also four strings to play a "symphonia", means a melody with a grammar tone, the quart, the quint and the octave (at least most scolars think so).
I think therefore Stefan´s interpretation is professionell and beautiful.
