Were female Slaves present in the army?
#1
I am writing a story set in ancient Rome during the reign of Tiberius.
An interesting story idea requires a Centurion to purchase a female slave. Was simply wanting some sort of clarification if that was even possible to do.

And if so, how far did it go? Like could a legionnaire have his own personal slaves present in the garrison? Or was the privilege of slave ownership in the army only given to officers?

More to do with Women generally in military communitys but well worth a read:

"Women and families in the auxiliary military communities of the Roman West in the first and second centuries AD" E.M.Greene. Thesis.

Theres a whole bunch of other articles which are probably worth a read such as:

"Sulpicia Lepidina and Elizabeth Custer, A Cross-cultural Analogy for the Social Role of Women on a Military Frontier" E.M.Greene.

"Those who wait at home: the effect of recruitment on women in the Lower Rhine area" C.Van Driel Murray.

"Women in Forts" C.Van Driel Murray.

Its certainly the case that there is lots of none adult male footware found in Roman frontier forts, which itself would imply that there were women present, and not just the occasional commanders wife, their status is open to debate....

"And the four bare walls stand on the seashore. a wreck a skeleton a monument of that instability and vicissitude to which all things human are subject. Not a dwelling within sight, and the farm labourer, and curious traveller, are the only persons that ever visit the scene where once so many thousands were congregated." T.Lewin 1867
