Legionaries helmet in Gladiator movie
#1
Hello, I have seeing recently a roman relief where the legionaries are crearly using this type of helmet, and I recogniced instantly that those are exactly the ones used in the movie Gladiator. Since the day I watched the movie, i have always though those were just your typical Hollywood fiction looking roman helmets, but this relief crearly says otherwise. Did this type of helmet really exist? Do they have a name? The look a more advanced version of the coolus helmet, but I have never seen any in any museum or in the internet.

Actually no and no. The relief you refer to is also known as Trajan's Column and has been discussed for decades. Facit - the helmets (and other pieces of equipment depicted there) are often simplified and standardised for the benefit of the viewer in Rome, and not 100% accurate for the benefit of posterity.

As to the helmets in Gladiator, they do not even resemble the helmets on Trajan's Column - the extras were told to pull the front guard down to make it look like a jockey-cap..

For a good overview for these helmets look here:
