Does anyone have any pictures (or know of any pictures) showing reconstruction river galleys of the Mainz/Oberstimm type crewed by men in authentic late Roman gear? The only ones I can find online have the vessels crewed largely by tourists and school parties!
I'm looking for something like this, in other words, but late Roman:
Any help or suggestions much appreciated!

On board sure, but actual action images are indeed quite rare.
Here's an image from 2014 of the felices seniores manning the 'Lusoria Rhenana'. ( FB album here)
Here's an image from 2013 of the fectienses seniores on board of the 'Rufia Materna'. ( FB album here)
Unfortunately only small images of the only time (that I know of) a real 'late Roman crew' ( legio III Italica and members of the populares vindelicenses) which rowed the 'Regina' in 2005. The ship was heavily sponsored but it'll give you an idea.
I have more of those at home I think. Perhaps Florian Himmler also has more images, he did some research in 2006 on the ship.

Perfect! Thanks Robert - I knew I'd seen something like that somewhere...
(your first facebook link seems a little peculiar, btw, but I'll get to it through the usual channels!)

Long time ago I did a Danube-river-navy impression. There are photos in Francois Gilbert´s book, which he took in Saint-Romain-en-Gal.

Is that his ' Légionnaires et auxiliaires' one? I think I saw a copy of that in Foyles in London a few months back. It looked good!

Joe, can I use one of these for my Numerus barcariorum Tigrisiensium page? The 12317 one in particular looks good
Cheers, Luke

Yes, it looks like it's escaped from an archaic vase painting...
Excellent pictures though - thanks again!

Well, I tried to join a while ago (because the site kept coming up in internet searches, but it was always "images are hidden from guests", which was very annoying; I though that sort of thing was for porn sites...), but for some weird reason, the software wouldn't implement my e-mail address correctly, so I could never log in.
Using a different e-mail address appears to have solved that problem (or it may have been the recent software switch here at RAT), so here I am.
Joe - thanks!
