Late Roman Nijmegen
#1
Does anyone know of an archaeological report or similar about the later Roman (c.4th century) fortification and settlements at Nijmegen?

Jona Lendering's Livius page here describes a ditched enclosure on the Valkhof of 200x250m and two civilian settlements - other web sources suggest Frankish settlements nearby as well.

Do we know whether the fort shows any evidence of fortification type? I'm assuming a simple turf wall and pallisade. The circuit seems to be quite large for this era - rather bigger than Portchester on the Saxon Shore.

little bit more info maybe here:
http://www2.rgzm.de/Transformation/Neder...gen_E.html

I suppose that this book will help:
Enckevort, H. Van & Thijssen, J., 2003, Nijmegen und seine Umgebung im Umbruch zwischen Römerzeit und Mittelalter. In: Kontinuität und Diskontinuität. Germania inferior am Beginn und am Ende der römischen Herrschaft. (Ergänzungsbände zum Reallexikon der Germanischen Altertumskunde 35) Berlin/New York. 83-118

there is an ebook here but very expensive, although it gives institutional log in

Thanks Gelu.

The rgzm page doesn't seem to give much info on the later period, and nowhere else have I found anything beyond what was on the Livius page. I had a look through some sections of the ebook you linked on Google, but couldn't find anything on the Valkhof site (at least, not that I could understand...)

It's not mentioned in Petrokovits's Fortification in the North West Roman Empire from the 3rd to the 4th centuries either - so I guess nothing much is known about it!

In Dutch:
M.J. Driessen - Bouwen om te blijven : de topografie, bewoningscontinuïteit en monumentaliteit van Romeins Nijmegen
is the most complete (chornological) outline of all big structures in Nijmegen.
Download it from here: http://dare.uva.nl/record/1/274189
