Matt, shall we start the bidding for the domain at, say, five hundred dollars? Who'll make it six?

Salve -
I'm in the process of scouring the universe for belt parts...and would like some suggestions for the "buttons" that are found on the apron straps. Does anyone know of a good supplier? (And why are the ones I see *in brass* all so expensive?!)

While I've never ordered from them, others have and say good quality.

Brass has gone up in price over the last year because copper has gone up.

I am curious to know where they got the idea that apron studs were domed - they are not. All of the Museum of London ones (yes, I've seen 'em all, so am officially 'sad'...) are flat-headed. Domed studs tend to be cavalry fittings and they are invariably decorated in a different way to apron studs (which are easily distinguishable by the raised concentric rings on the undersurface of the head).
Puzzling.

Thank you - I looked through their website and sent off an email. Prices seem competitive, and somewhat below other places I've seen, depending on what they say about shipping costs. I *should* place an order with them just for the funny name. Love it!

Maybe the sound of hammer on anvil? Strange, but it sticks in the brain, and that's probably what they had in mind.

As we see similarities with belt plates (Colchester/ Vindonissa) some studs could be from a particular fabrica, hence the London finds are flat.
I have seen photos of a supposed single 'apron strap' (desperately looking for a photo noew) that has overly domed studs? Or would you say that it is probably a horsegear fitting? There are also some other domed stud examples in your Military Apron article.
If the backing rivet is peened on a soft surface such as wood, you do get a degree of doming occurring centrally on the disc.

There are only two studded straps I can think of that you might mean – the Mainz one, that is only depicted in a woodcut in Alterthümer unser heidnischen Vorzeit 2 (not domed) and one from a 2nd/3rd-century cavalry harness set from Celles-les-Waremmes (domed).

Figure 14,8–10? I know, I still worry about those. No proof they belong to an apron other than diameter and there is clearly an overlap between apron/cavalry harness in some cases. On much safer ground with the flat ones. My point that none of the London apron studs are domed remains true however.
