My understanding is that German law also allows the scanning of individual articles for non-commercial scientific use including the retention of third parties to do the scanning (this would be me in this case) as long as the third party does not receive a consideration and the copy is not disseminated publicly (§ 53 of the German Copyright Act). Therefore I believe that we did not break any laws, certainly we did not intend to.
