Just finished another project.
All the components were already laying around, but because there is an event tomorrow (Saturday) I had to finish it.
The scabbard is made of wood covered in linen , first glued (normal wood glue used) to the wood and than painted.
The slide is made of oak.
This is first glued to the scabbard and then secured with rawhide.
The rawhide was first soaked in cold water for a night and then cut up in the needed length and width for going trough the holes in the slide.
It dried during the night and now holds the grip firm.
Next part is to see how long it holds.
The books that I used for this reconstruction are:
Römische Schilde.
Studien zu Funden und bildlichen Überlieferungen vom Ende der Republik bis in die späte Kaizerseit.
Ansgar Nabbefeld. Cologne 2007
Studien zur Römische Schwertbewaffnung in de Kaiserzeit
Christian Miks, Cologne 2007
Sheaths and Scabbards in England AD400-1100
Esther A Cameron
The blade of the sword was made by Tim Noyes of Heron Armoury.
The pommel and crossguard are made of oak, the grip is made of leather "washers".
The only metallic (brass) fitting are the pommel washer for riveting the tang and the bottom crossguard plate.
