I dunno why this cropped into my head but the thought occured to me the other day, would all soldiers shields be the same size? i know it seems pretty obviously that they would...but then i thought well would a much taller soldier not need to cover the same vital areas as a short soldier.. for example im nearly 6ft 3.. and possibly a good 8 or 9 inches taller than the guys in my group and my shield does look smaller when i hold it in comparison to the rest of the guys..
i suppose if this was the case, forming up in tesudo would be slightly more difficult.. just wondered if there was any written evidence to tell us that scutums were always the same dimensions?

Yup, we have talked about this before. Since practically every surviving shield and shield cover is a different size, there was definitely variation! But there was most likely some sort of guideline, at least at some points, since one Republican general (Scipio?) punished a legionary for having a shield which was too big. In my group we use the measurement of shoulder to knee as a vague guideline. Combat is rare, but marching all day with your shield slung on your back is all too common. And we haven't found any problem forming a testudo with shields of many different sizes.

Magnus, do you want to confess to being that legionary's commander?
Oh, heck, I should have PhotoShopped a boss onto that shield! Wouldn't actually save his fingers, but it would look better. Hey, and I could change all their faces so they look like me, and it would be more beautiful! Hmm....

ahh facinating! Any other suggestions on what would be a good measurement of size? so is it shoulders to knees for the height? what about the width of the shield? would it be shoulders length accross?
Cheers

The Dura Europas scutum was approximately 42" x 34". I'd add a couple of inches to allow for modern stature compared to Roman stature.
