Salve,
For a Legionary in AD 120 (Legio XXI Rapax)... should the corners of the scuta be slightly rounded off or left sharp right angles? Obviously, rounded makes the edging a much easier task.
I will be doing the edging in rawhide, not brass due to financial restrictions as well as we will be using these for SCA battle and light brass simply wouldn't cut the mustard.
Also, is there any evidence of umbos being left black from the forge?
What say you good people?

I think most attributable finds of metal corner edgings are very square, not round.

OK, so unanimous on the 90 degree edges...
Now how about any historical evidence for umbos being left black from the forge? It sounds plausible as it is a great rust deterrent and esthetically is quite striking as well.

I doubt it Phil, otherwise segmentata plates would be left forge blackened. All the artistic representations we have show bright colours when depicting armour. Plus, any scratches and dings (and there would be A LOT!) would create a metallic patch under the blackening...re-heating the boss wouldn't be feasible as the shield would catch fire. Chances are it was cleaned and brought to a satin finish and kept that way by the legionary, who of course probably kept it oiled with something.

Tinning... I know there was a tutorial on that somewhere???
Isn't that basically fluxing and torching melting on?
Reason why I ask is I am using 16 gauge and it is somewhere between a hot rolled and cold rolled state as it has a darker tone to it. To remove it, it takes a serious amount of passes with an angle grinder/flapdisk to remove and reduces the thickness significantly. So tinning may just be the solution.
If so, what flux is used?

In my experience this can be removed (the dark hot rolled tone) by soaking in vinegar - just do not soak it for too long!

Wow, I wouldn't have figured on that! Thanks for the warning!
Does it affect brass/bronze that way too? (sorry to go off thread, folks, just this one question and I'll go away)
