I think that helmet was object of debat before. I think someboby says it could be a helmet with a kind of protector or cover (leather, cloth?) removable.

I'll put that suggestion to the moderators Henk.

Jim, do you know what part of the column your pictures are from? Isn't both campaigns portrayed on the column, one after the other? If some of those helmet pictures are from the early first campaign, it may explain the crests, if they brought the cross bracing in later on.

Could be the rings a kind of subject any form of plume made of a material not preserved or recycled (like the weaponry, make of metal)?

As i can remember all the rings are depicted erected, in the same way. If a ring like the Niedermormter were depicted, probably could move freely and not always be erected.

Matt, if you look at the linked pages they have the spiral number, etc. Can't tell you any more I'm afraid.

BINGO! Which might bring us back nicely to the original question of the use of rank identifiers in the field.

I suggested that perhaps the shield was the identifier. but .. What about coloured helmet covers? You wouldn't need crests if helmet colours were used.

"Ah! Over there in the red helmet!"

hahahaha....no, that would definately help. But that wouldn't help in a unit of 80 or so men all of roughly the same height in the midst of a battle. You're going to need something that stands up and out a bit more.

I've got a feeling I started that thread on helmet covers  It's an option.

How about painted helmets?  I started a thread on that as well....
