What legions did Trajan take to Dacia?
#38
Quote:First Dacian War AD 101-102:

vex. XX Valeria Victrix?

Second Dacian War AD 105-106:
...
vex. XX Valeria Victrix?

Aha -- I think I've got to the bottom of this one!

Belegstelle: CIL 06, 03493 (p 3396) = CIL 06, 32902 = LegioXVApo 00239
(Provinz: Roma / Ort: Roma )
...] leg X[3 leg(io)] XI Cl[audia // leg(io) XX] Valer(ia) Vict(rix) leg(io) XV Apol(linaris) [...

Not noted in the usual places (e.g. M.G. Jarrett, "Legio XX Valeria Victrix in Britain", Arch. Cambr. 117, 1968, 77-91), this inscription from Trajan's Forum in Rome has been cited by Karl Strobel (Untersuchungen zu den Dakerkriegen Trajans, Bonn 1984) as evidence that the three named legions (XI Claudia, XV Apollinaris, XX Valeria Victrix) participated in the First Dacian War. Hence, our vexillation of XX VV.

I can sleep easy tonight.
