RomanArmy.com Staff Positions Available
#1
ALL:

We have a great need to fill the following staff positions at RomanArmy.com. If any of these volunteer openings interest you, send an email to [email protected] for more info.

For most of the positions that involve updating or otherwise contributing material directly to RomanArmy.com, a knowledge of (or willingness to learn) Macromedia's DreamWeaver web-editing software is very helpful, though not necessarily essential.

Researcher

We are looking for academic professionals or advanced amateur historians to serve as Researchers for RomanArmy.com. Researchers will contribute original material, and participate in the overall development of the site, as well as recruit writers and peer-review others' submitted articles for accuracy. Ability to use Macromedia DreamWeaver web-editing software (DW4) is NOT required.

Photographic Editor

The Photo Editor ensures that photos used on the site are of high quality and small enough for rapid download. Where necessary, the Editor takes .bmp or .tif file photos and converts them to high-quality JPEG format for web use. He/she checks that photo links are all intact, and uses DW4 web-editing software to upload files and correct links. The Editor takes photos at events and locations of interest to the Roman studies community, and otherwise coordinates graphical elements on the site as needed.

Bibliographer

This staff member is in charge of the RomanArmy.com Bibliography. He/she collects and organizes references and sources for research on the Roman military, then submits this data in an standardized format to the Webmasters for publication (or if DW4-smart, may manage his own section directly). He/she administers two forms of Bibliography -- Alphabetical by Author, and By Subject. The Bibliographer also receives and writes reviews of books and summarizes books in short abstracts. A plus: have access to a university library or a community library that offers Interlibrary Loan services.

Reference Manager

This individual is in charge of the Resources Section of RomanArmy.com. He/she gathers, collates, and submits assemblages of raw data, such as epigraphic collections, photo collections, concordances of primary source passages from ancient authors, and other useful references, including maps. Ideally, like the Bibliographer, this staffer has library access as well as internet access, and possibly some experience in databasing.

Events Coordinator

This staff member coordinates official events for members of the staff (making scheduling and lodging arrangements for the bi-annual Staff Meeting, for instance) and also coordinates social gatherings for our discussion forum community Roman Army Talk, which is affiliated with RomanArmy.com. This job would be suited to an extrovert possessing communication skills and a sense of adventure, as well as the ability to draw people together from around the world to annual community events.

Awards Director

This staffer oversees the Corona Awards Program, RomanArmy.com's means of honoring websites that promote study of the Roman world and particularly the Roman military. The Awards Director will gather submission and nominate candidates for the four grades of Corona Awards that are given out quarterly. He/she will appoint judges and receive their critiques of candidate sites, then inform site owners of the outcome, and make arrangements for winners to receive the URL to display their award.

Outreach Coordinator

Publicist for RomanArmy.com. Should be an enthusiastic and extroverted person who believes strongly in our educational mission and likes interacting with other site owners to promote our site and this discussion forum. Role includes reaching out to other website owners to request that they link to our sites and spread the word, and submitting the main site to suitable history and military website awards programs, and as well as adding the site to web-rings.

Legal Advisor

The Legal Advisor researches issues of copyright and fair use, publication and authorship rights, liability, and other issues that arise as a result of website publishing. When other sites plagiarize the material on our site in violation of our copyright and conditions of use, the Legal Advisor contacts site owners to request that they give credit where it is due, or remove our copyrighted materials from their site. If absolutely necessary, the Legal Advisor coordinates for legal assistance from a professional lawyer.
Again, send an email to [email protected] for more info.
