Reading through all this has been interesting. I wonder, though, how could 'barbarization' not occur over time out on the frontiers. Who are the soldiers having children with? Wouldn't the sons be required to take up the fathers' professions, or were the illegitimae not affected by that law/tradition?
We know that at time barbarian dress and barbarian hair styles/hair dyes were popular/fads in Rome, so why doesn't that indicate a willingness to absorb other cultures. They took other culture's military tactics, weapons and people as well. Perhaps I am being too simplistic. Could someone recommend a good source that contradicts my conjectural assumptions? Best way to learn is finding someone knowledgeable who disagrees!
