That fits with Ammianus (26.1.4), who has Valentinian as tribune of the Schola Secunda Scutariorum (guard cavalry unit) at the time of his acclamation. He had apparently been promoted from his previous position commanding the Ioviani and Herculiani around the time of Julian.
