Battle of Himera Museum
#1
THE NEW "BATTLE OF HIMERA MUSEUM" IS OPENED

Himera (Sicily) was the scene of a crushing defeat of the Carthaginians at the hands of allied forces of Agrigento and Syracuse (480 BC), battle described by Greek historian Herodotus of Halicarnassus. In 408 BC, the Carthaginians, newly invading the island, took and razed the town to the ground.

During the archaeological excavations of the site, relevant data, relating the two battles, came out : a couple of bronze greaves (Iberian mercenary soldier),  iron spearheads and arrowheads lodged in the bodies of the soldiers and the skeletons of 30 horses died during the battle.

The objects found on the site of the battle are now displayed in the new "Pirro Marconi Museum", nearby the archaeological site.
