Excavations at Insula 14 -- the so-called "southern quarter".
Excavator in charge : Dr. Norbert Zieling.
Objective is the research of an area near the southwestern corner of the CUT, shedding light on its function and dating.
Prospections by geo-radar in 2012 yielded the course of a wall of more than 370m in length , his northern end bending by 85° to run over the insulae 6,13 and 14. In 2013 the further use of geo-radar led to the evidencing of two gates leading through the wall's course in the northwest and northeast. The function of this separated area of 3,7 ha in size in the south (rather the southwestern corner !!) of the CUT is unclear. In 2014 archeological surveys of one tower of the northeastern gate followed. From 2017 the excavations at this gate have been continuing. Sizeable parts of the two gate-towers and a wooden sinker plus a drain-canal in the middle of the gate's course have been researched archeologically . Further research on the street passing through this gate has been started. First indications towards dating this installation into the second half of the 3rd century AD have been found.
So far, so good.
