Actually, as you have said you want to do an impression of a soldier of Caesar's time, if I were you I would avoid the segmentata, partly as there is absolutely no evidence for it until the last eighteen years of Augustus' reign, but also because we simply do not know what the earliest form of segmentata really looked like. All types of segmentata are not the same and the Kalkriese type exhibited features which differed from those of later types. Kalkriese type armour lacked the tie rings used to do up the girdle plates of the later Corbridge type and also featured a different style of hinge. Only a handful of plates have survived, namely the type find breast plate, one mid-collar plate and a possible piece of a girdle plate. There is also the remains of a shoulder plate which may or may not be from a Kalkriese segmentata. Other than that it is just a large number of brass fittings of a distinctive type. We do not know how the girdle plates of the Kalkriese type were done up but a huge number of Kalkriese type buckles have been found on sites dating to the first half of the first century AD, which led Mike Bishop to suggest that the Kalkriese type may have been done up with straps and buckles.
As there are so many question marks over what segmentata actually looked like during the reigns of Augustus, Tiberius, Gaius and Claudius, you are on far safer ground wearing mail, which was used by all troop types.
