True, true ... I was aware of the siege, when I was there I remember seeing one of the northern wall towers that was slighted, and not repaired (by the Roman army ... Sulla, Marius .. sorry its not my period!!). But I really think the sentiment is just cinema fodder, taking a page (or chapter) out of Gladiator, with its 'free and democratic Republic' versus the tyranny of the emperor. In fact there are lots of things 'borrowed', 'stolen' or 'imitated' from Gladiator ...
