Things to do:

1. Make a cardboard mock-up so that you get the size correct. A Lorica Seg is like a well-fitted suit. Follow the pattern given on the legio XX site. More reference materials like the Bishop books are also helpful.

2. Collect your tools. You need something to cut the metal. Your best bet is a Beverly B1 shears, but a band saw with a metal blade will also work. Also needed is something to make holes. A sheet metal punch is needed here. In addition you'll need the usual metal working tools. Everything can be made, however, the rosets require a die. Lacking access to a machine shop, it might be easiest to purchase these.

3. The seg itself is made from 18 gauge mild steel. This is about 1mm thick which I understand is in close approximation to what the romans used. Hinges, buckles, and lacing loops are made the brass. Solid rivets, both flat head and round head may be purchased on-line. Copper is preferred over brass as these are easier to remove when things break.
