It is probably worth reading the Strategikon of the emperor Maurikios (582-602 AD)as well as the books recommended. Also the thesis of Athony Brogna ( a military man )gives some overall insights The Generalship of Belisarius

It is definately worth reading the strategikon. I've read part of a Translation (albeit not the best one) and it actually provided rather accurate depictions for a Roman text. If I'm correct, I believe it was considered the only legitimate manual on combined arms theory in the west until the 17th or 18th centuries.
