What I show in my drawing is how by reversing one half of a hinge helps overcome the strain on a hinge pin where the shoulder plates overlap.
It is cheating of course but then with both halves of the hinge against both overlapped iron plates there is not only strain on the hinge but also against the rivets of the lower plate part of the hinge.
This reversal of half a hinge can be used also with a hinge made of folded over thin sheet, but the point I do make is all hinges were not just folded thin sheet but solid metal also.
