A Repro Sarmatian Akinakes
#1
The Sarmatian akinakes was famed for being carried strapped to the outside of the right thigh, and two versions were popular: an early curved rectangular-pommel style, and a later ringed-pommel. For my kit, I chose the earlier design:

The illustration shows three sizes, two with narrow blades like a dagger.

Shopping around, I discovered Windlass Steelcrafts made something similar. Here it is with a prototype "holster." Originally, the sheath and holster were all one unit, either leather or metal.

All I had to do was figure out how the akinakes was actually worn. Not an easy assignment. Here is a non-technical "first idea" on a painting of a Sarmatian warrioress that I did back in 2007.

The reality of it was a little different. See the post-- "Sarmatian Equipment Belt & Attachments."
