For its size this volume provides a very good overview of the Roman army in the first three centuries of the imperial period. It provies a concise and compact text touching upon a wide range of subjects without giving in to the vices of oversimplification and generalisation. Well annotated and with an up to date bibliography it caters to those with more than a passing interest as well as the general public. In my opinion it is highly recommendable reading.<br>
