Auxilliary Archers Impressions

I wonder/question why armour would be excluded from the archers equipment. A lighter version of a hamata, without things like shoulder doubling, would be perfectly understandable. These guys didn't carry shields! At least a hamata would give some sort of protection should they be flanked (mayor worry for archers). If I were an archer back then, be sure I would wear a hamata, just as I do in my current impression of one ....
On footwear, are you sure about those calligae as exculsive footwear? They are a good option, for sure, but getting towards 100 ad, boots would be good as well, wouldn't they?
