However, strangely enough, on every depiction of an attic helmet (afaik) the brow plate seems to "pop out" from the bowl.
The Louvre reliefs and the aforementioned Severus Acceptus stele don't seem to leave room for interpretation, IMO.
OTOH, you're right, there's no archeological remains to support the artistic depictions.
Heh, now you have me wondering how feasible it would be to replace the brow plate on my helmet
with a hammered version. :wink:
BTW, you can find a detailed drawing of the Severus stele in 'Bishop & Coulston', page 174.
I wonder what the man's rank was. He has greaves which leads me to think he may have been a centurion or cavalryman.
