Well, Alban was supposed to have been beheaded but he was a Roman soldier and, presumably, a citizen. Beheading was the common punishment for Roman citizens as opposed to crucifixion which was reserved to rebellious noncitizens and, especially, slaves. Think in terms of Crassus and his treatment of the survivors of the Spartacus Revolt.
