Embosing and Tinning Scabbard plates ect ?

Are we sure that these examples actually were selectively tinned? Just to play devil's advocate for a second, from what I see of these images posted so far, it's all the low areas that are tinned. Looks to me like it could have originally been completely tinned, and the high areas worn through from years of polishing.
