Not to hijack your thread Luc, but as an alternative here's how I made my scales:
Make one example scale, use that to lay out a strip template, bind a short stack of 6 strips with regular masking tape, tape the template on top, drill the holes, and then snip the individual scales off and shape (not shown). The short stack and long template alleviates the need for a special holder to secure cut scales firmly for drilling- vital since if the stack moves, the holes won't just be off, but the drillbit can become stuck and even break. If one uses a stack of strips that is only short, tape holds them just fine. It took me I think 4 minutes to drill all the holes for 48 scales.
