Starting from scratch
#1
Here in Winnipeg there is no roman reenactment group. I would very much like to change all of that.
I'm not new to the reenactment game, having done ACW, Medieval (admittedly it was SCA but in our circle we tried to rise above our surroundings) and 1820's.
This beast is a bit different.
I'm thinking of starting an Auxillia unit but finding names of units not in the Notitia Dignitatum is... difficult to say the least. Not to mention the shield designs.
Now doing a Legio would be easier in principle. Shield designs and names are quite easy to come by, but the equipment itself is more expensive.
So my dilemma is this; do something that has the research done for me but is more expensive (Legio) or something that will take hours of research but cost less in the long run (Auxillia)
I may as well just ask you good folks for advice, and I hope this isn't an imposition.
And heck, if anyone DOES have a few names of Auxillia units and shield designs from the 1st century, I certainly would appreciate the info.

Oh and for the record, I plan on being the Optio of the unit and wear a Squamata (a friend of mine is punching out the squamae with a CnC punch press in the next few weeks) with an Auxillary B helmet from Deepeeka or a Gallic C.
Shields/bosses and Javelin heads will be made by me (I made a few dozen Pila heads and ferrules for Legio XX so these should be no problem) and swords/pugio will be purchased from Deepeeka.
Hopefully that should work.
