Wear and Tear
#4
We deliberately battle damage our scutums

Some guys cut slashes in their tunics and sew them up.

Some guys have mismatched lobate hinges on their segmentatas to simulate having been repaired.

Helmets have dings, dents and repairs. One guy has a sword crease in his that's been hammered out... not too well.

Some bracae and feminalia are wornand patched at the knee.

Segs with dings, dents, scratches, rust pits... like MC sort of said.. chuck 'em onto the floor and kick 'em around a bit...

Now, if we were soldiers in the fort, or worse in some fetid place like Londinium, with some snotty nosed sons of Senators trying to act like officers so they can someday get their wimpy arses elected or appointed to some pocket liner job civil job then likely is that we'd be shining like m'lady's fancy mirror in the mid-day sun just to keep them happy, make 'em feel like they're militarymen just 'cause they can order a soldier to polish something.

But we ain't in a fort.

We're up here on the frontier and it looks like we'll be here til first snow fall. Patrolling and carving roads into the earth is work. A couple of the guys do nothing but repair the segs the other guys are wearing... but they've just about run out of rivets and have started tying plates together on the inside using leather thongs and old bow strings. Just the other day one of them used a lady's hair pin to fix a busted lobate hinge. Had to carve her a nice one from some deer antler in trade otherwise he'd've heard no end of it and his laundry would never get done.. and none of us would abide the stink of that for long. Bathing in the cold water of the small river down the slope is barely adequate. That lye and ash cake gets the grime off but it just ain't the same as a good strigil scraping after a long soak in hot water.

My troop are gonna own the balineum when we get back. We're up here doing dog hard duty so we earn our immunes while we over-winter.. don't know where yet.. hoping for Lindum.. the wife's family lives there.. brand new baths too... the Veterans at the new colonia there have out done themselves I hear.

So listen, if you have to escort some Tribune's wife to some poofter merchant's daughter's birthday you go one ahead and get yourself all reflective and mirror like. That'll be sure to make them feel real safe they got you to ward off the Caledonii. Next thing you'll know they'll want the bronze soup pot as shiny as you and guess who'll that duty seein' as he's so adept with a sea sponge, chalk powder and nut oil! Guess we'll call you Beccin Callius from now on.
