Well, we ended up going fro Gripping Beast 25mm (more like 28mm) Early Imperial Romans and Gauls. I'd tried painting some 15mm and although I kind of like the small size I wanted to get more individuality into the figures. I'm pretty happy with the GB figs, though the Numidian cavalry have rather mask-like faces (um, maybe they are supposed to be wearing masks? I've only ever seen Numidians without masks.) and the horse sculpting is a bit average - a flat out gallop with a tail that hangs down? I don't think so. Their command figs are nice and I particularly like the bearskins! Will post a photo once they are painted.
Had a particularly successful trip to the 2nd-hand book store - scored an as-new edition of Ann Hyland's ' Training the Roman Cavalry' and Barrl Cunliffe's book on Ancient Celts.
