The coin is where I doubt you can tell the difference, however on the remaining carvings from columns and such, you can tell the difference between a wolf and a lion and a bear. Bear and Lion ears are round, Wolf ears are more pointed. (Yes I have seen bears with pointed ears, but their snout is sitll different from the wolf, and I don't think the honey bears were known to Romans.) Maybe they Romans didn't wear the wolfskins, just because they had become a religious totem, maybe wolves were so plentiful that they didn't really mean anything, while a bear or lion was unusual and meant something special.

Yes Petreninus, you are reaching, trying to put modern ideas in an ancient context, but it was not done historically, (I still awaiting any proof otherwise). Some folks, when they were making movies and starting their own legions, thought the same way, but they didn't do in depth historical research or they didn't have the information we have available today. It's up to each individual, whether they just go with what feels cool, or actually limit themselves to what can be proven.

If you look at the standard bearers in our own Roman Army image base, how many are wearing any headdress? If we look at Trajan's column, how many are wearing bears, lions or wolves,? What about on Titus' arch?

If you don't care about accuracy, then you can wear what you want, it's your money. There are several groups that are currently getting rid of their wolf head dresses as they become more accurate. You may be able to get one of those for a song.
