If you are not going to do a proper (historically accurate and verifiable) bearskin, (What coin shows a headdress in enough detail to prove it is a wolf-skin?) and going to just use a 'wolf' skin, why not use a COYOTE, I can pick up dead coyotes along the road for free.
Driving through Tennessee I saw several bears killed along I-40 (smaller bears) and already tanned bearskins with claws and skull are not that expensive and easily available here in the US.
There will also be several Lion and large cat skins available when the Colorado based rescue ranch that has been caring for lions and tigers and such goes into bankruptcy, within the next couple of months. They have already announced that they will have to kill all of their animals, since no zoos are wanting to take them, and they are running out of money for food.
Back to the bottom line, if you are doing Imperial Roman standard bearer or musician, there is NO EVIDENCE for use of wolf skins, (unless there is a coin with enough detail to show difference between wolf ears/muzzle and bear ears/muzzle?) Who can give a reference to that coin? I want to see it!
Sure, the companies who make miniature soldiers did make loads of wolf-skins, but then, they are more interested in the art, and having something that people can paint and identify as a "Roman", hence the use of the "Roman Wolf" motif. I still have a bunch of 'minifig' Roman standard bearers with wolf-skin headdresses, awaiting me finding time to use acrylic paint and modify them into historically correct bearskins....
Sure, the first Roman reenactment groups used wolf-skins. (Some also used leather segmentata or 'trooper' helmets). With the knowledge available today, there is no reason to repeat errors of the past.
