1. To answer the question: ask a zoo, animalgarden or wild park to get the skin of a natural died animal. You ll need a certification that this animal was died or killed under control and wasnt killed illegal.
If you cant get there, what i expect, or will pay to much, you should also try big zoos in other countries.
But please, ask for NATURAL died animals.
Ask also for the skull, teeth and mention that the "freets" has to stay at the skin, you ll need em.
2. Mummius, a bear is another proofed possibility, but wolf (or shakal which looks quite similar) seems to be the other most used animal for that. If i remember right already Polybios mentioned the tradition of the velites to use such animal skins.
I remember that Lions and such animals just were seen in praetorian context, but i ll have to check this first before i can make a clear sentence out of it.
