The day after Cannae, August 3, 216 B.C. Was Maharbal right?
#13
Excellent post, laudes to you.
Any Hellenistic prince who suffered a couple of defeats would be overthrown by his sons, wife, friends, or anyone near; the roman senate could sustains several defeats with no consequences and they would keep recruiting another army until they would find some genius commander. That would explain why Rome would Winn her wars.
And it was a fight between an small army and an medium state. Hannibal had to Winn all battles to survive (and he actually did it until Zama), with no hopes of anything better than to keep his army intact.
