The problem I am discussing is exactly the same as the Nazi issue in Europe. At least here in the US we don't risk going to jail, but that does not mean that this issue is without risk. I am just saying that at least IMHO the risks here out weigh the benefits.
Look I have no authority or leadership position at all. Nor do I want one. I'm just throwing in my 2 worthless cents that I think this is risky. If it's going to be done then it needs to be thought through carefully. Even if a member of the public is unnecessarily belligerent, our response on this issue needs to be considered and sensitive. Going off half-cocked on someone could get us all the sort of attention none of us wants. Let's just be careful.
Look I generally oppose any concessions made to political correctness. But I really think slavery continues to be such a hot subject in the US that we shouldn't touch it.
I'm not sure that there is much if any evidence for the straight arm salute. I belong to Legion XX, and we rarely salute at all. But I believe the preferred salute in our group is the modern hand to brow, which I think has some evidence from a couple of carvings, but I may be wrong.
Yes, there were white slaves at some points and there were black slave owners, but these were the rare exceptions, and this is irrelevant to the way people feel about it.
