A close inspection of most of the Hollywood Roman armour, particularly that used in the Gladiator movie, may be shown to be very cheesy, as you put it. For example, the helmets used in Gladiator were based upon examples from the English Civil War, not Roman at all, but they had a whole bunch of guys together which made for an impressive display. Here are a few photos from the Nashville film shoot, where we had almost a full century:
